Stencil action!

I thought that I'd put a stencil up on the wall of the boat where the stereo is... I figure that the new stereo is not very 'period appropriate', so some street art would be fine as well.

I made a stencil of some hands holding the stereo.
Here is it cut out:

And the space, blank:

Then I masked off the stereo to make sure I didn't get paint on important bits:

Then laid it down and sprayed it on:

I forgot to protect the VHF from the overspray... oh well.

Fireworks

On Saturday night, there was a bunch of loud booming outside, and I looked out to see a huge fireworks display going off at Gassworks Park, just north of my boat.

I got some good pics of it. Apparently it was for the release of Microsoft Vista. Meh...

The stove is in!

It's finally in the boat! ...Although, I still need to hook up all the fuel lines, and the smoke-stack. But, it's in there and it feels good to get it outta the truck!

Here is the beast as its been living in the back of the truck for about 6 months now...

Before I brought it in, I moved the mounting bracket for the fuel regulator valve to the back of the stove, because I am installing the stove in an athwartships position, instead of fore-and-aft like the manufacturer is assuming.

Then I got it in a dock cart...

And bolted it down!

Now I have to clean the mess up in my galley.

Finishing the shielding

I finished up the stove shielding this weekend. It all went quite well and it's nice to get over with.

Here is the first piece I screwed down... I really like the look of the galvi metal with the bronze screws.

Then I just went to town drilling out the holes and fastening it down... some of the spots near the arch were tricky to get everything sandwitched in there just right, but I managed...

The last thing I did was to screw down the back bracket for the stove to slide onto when that does in there.

But, I still have one more piece of metal to cut and bend to fit... right now that piece is sharp as hell and has cut me many times when doing back and forth between the hanging locker and the galley. I need to fix that soon...

CWB pics

My trip to the Center for Wooden Boats... I go there a lot (I bought my boat from them, and they are about a 5 min walk away).

This time I took some pictures. I'll share them.

They are of Shrimpo, a Herreshoff 12 1/2 being restored at CWB. I helped hand the new yellow cedar garboard plank... Fun stuff.

... and there is Wawona. Rotting schooner extrodenare. Sad.

More of the same

The stove stuff is still going on... here is a little update:

I got all of the insulation mater cut to fit, and I needed to re-make some of the sheet metal flashing because I neglected to take into account the insulation thickness... no big deal, I know a lot more now and will do a better job...

So I took the piece of metal to work and used their sheet metal shears and break to form it.

Here is lining it out:

Cutting:

And bending:

Finished:

We'll see how it fits this evening... in the mean time, I get to ride home with the big sheet metal box on my back.

Stove insulation

I was not working on the stove project for a while because I could not find a proper product for the heat insulation. But now I finally did, Hardiboard... Basically a quality fiber/cement board.

So, I went to Home Depot to pick up a sheet, but I knew that I didn't have the proper tools to cut the stuff. I took that as a good enough reason to buy a new 5 Amp Bosch jigsaw! New tools!

Here is the work on the dock cutting the board (see the saw?)...

... and installing it... looking good.

But man does that board do a number on blades. At least when they're new, they cut like butter!

Tool envy

Yesterday, Cass and I went to Hardwicks for tool shopping fun, mostly for her. She ended up getting a awesome set of Fuller combo countersink/taper bits... and it comes with the proper plug cutters! I think I'll be borrowing these babies soon!

Slow times

I have not had much time working on the boat lately... things have been busy and the social life is picking up a bit, so I figure it is a good time to take a bit of a break.

But I did put bungs in the sink trim to 'star to finish' off the project.

So, I got out the varnish and bungs...

And put them in... simple.

That's all I got for now. Next up is more sheet metal work and insulation for the stove install.

Stereo install

For Christmas my parents got me a stereo for my boat to replace the old 70's vintage one I had.

So, I spent a good amount of time after the holidays installing the stereo.

First I had to soder up some cables for the install:

And cut out the proper sized hole (note the common stereo installation tool):

Then I sodered up the harness for all the other junk...

And I crammed it all in... awesome tunes!

Christmas present

Cass got me this for Christmas.

Awesome book, thanks baby!
